Visceral Manipulation is a gentle manual therapy that helps your body's ability to release restrictions and compensations that cause pain and dysfunction. This therapy was developed by Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral of the Upledger Institute. Dr. Jean-Pierre began teaching VM in 1985 and has written countless books in the area of biomechanics, VM therapy and thermal diagnosis and created the Barral Institute to advance in his research and seminars.
Viscera is the medical term for the internal organs like the lungs, kidneys, liver, etc. Visceral Manipulation or VM is based on the premise that the viscera (internal organs) have physiological movement because of the serous membranes surrounding the organs and their related fascia, ligaments and other living tissues binding it to the body. This movement is divided into two components; visceral mobility which is movement related to involuntary movement or movement of the diaphragm and visceral motility which is innate movement of the organ itself.
VM does not specifically focus on the site of pain or dysfunction, but rather evaluates the whole body to locate the origin of the problem. Once the body is evaluated, the therapist then senses the pathological or decreased motion of the organ along with any restrictive patterns throughout the body and begins to use VM techniques. Visceral Manipulation therapy enhances the body's ability to heal itself and is complimentary to CranioSacral Therapy.
